About the Chain Script Alphabet

I digitized this alphabet so I could replicate hand chain-stitching from some vintage family Christmas stockings, which I wanted to recreate as closely as possible to the originals. One of these is shown at right.

NOTE: The free alphabet is 4" size, but for the stocking shown I used the lettering in 2" size since the name is so long. Shorter names could be stitched in a larger size font. The stocking itself is about 20" long from top to toe.

While the chain stitch sews out just fine with regular #40 embroidery thread, I suggest using a slightly heavier thread for best results, especially in the larger sizes.

The stitching on this Christmas stocking was done with #30 cotton sewing thread, though #30 rayon would also work. The chain-stitched bell and holly are also traditional family motifs.
